Fridges can waste a lot of home energy. In fact some organizations note that fridges may be the leading most expensive electrical appliance you’ve got in your home. To make sure you save money and energy do the following…

Clean your coils regularly.

Don’t put totally hot food in the fridge – don’t leave it out forever, but at least during your meal.

Next time you need to upgrade make sure you choose an energy efficient model. Look for the Energy Star label and buy the smallest fridge to meet your needs – bigger equals more material and energy use. You can even visit the Energy Star website and find their calculator tool that will tell you how much money you’ll save on electricity if you buy a newer, more energy efficient appliance.

Make sure your fridge is only running at 41 degrees at most. Most fridges do not need to be colder than about 36-41 degrees. Your freezer, if working right should be set at minus 5 degrees.

Don’t open the door and look and look. Know what you need before you open the fridge.

If possible don’t place your fridge next to the stove or a window that gets a lot of sun in the summer. It’ll heat it up and make it need more energy to stay cool.

Make sure the door seal is tight.
