October is Fair Trade month (oh so soon), and to celebrate you might want to grab some refreshing and sparkling organic and Fair Trade Santa Cruz TeaZers. TeaZers add a nice a carbonated twist to tea from the Fair Trade tea company, Choice Organic Tea. TeaZers add a splash of Santa Cruz Organic juice to each TeaZer for a subtle fruit juice tea. Flavors include Lemon, Raspberry, Pear and Passion fruit. My household recently tried them all, and here’s what we thought.

Product: Santa Cruz Organic TeaZer sparking teas, made with a unique blend of high quality, brewed organic green, white and black tea varieties, organic juice, and sparkles!

Ingredients: Vary by flavor, but nothing chemical or icky. For example, the Lemon TeaZers contain, SPARKLING BREWED TEA* (FILTERED WATER; ORGANIC GREEN, WHITE AND BLACK TEA LEAVES), ORGANIC EVAPORATED CANE JUICE,* ORGANIC WHITE GRAPE AND ORGANIC LEMON CONCENTRATES, ORGANIC NATURAL LEMON FLAVOR.[*FAIR TRADE CERTIFIED]

Calories & Nutrition: TeaZers are just 90 calories per bottle and contain 10% juice but they’re not really nutritionally significant. This is more a fun drink. Like soda but way less sugary and of course not full of chemicals. Teas do contain antioxidants and health benefits, but I’m not sure if there’s enough in these drinks to matter.

Cost: $5.49 for four 12 0z bottles but I’d look for sales; I always see Santa Cruz products on sale at my local grocer.

Eco perks:

The Santa Cruz Organic company has so many eco-perks your eyes will pop – see all their eco-perks. These teas in particular come in recyclable packaging, recyclable glass bottles, and are Fair Trade certified & organic.

Taste testing group: Myself, my eight-year old Cedar, plus two adult pals of mine.

What we thought:

santa cruz fair trade teas

TeaZers were a huge hit at my house. We all loved them, and felt that they were a fun drink alternative to say soda. We  drink a ton of water but sometime you want something fizzy, and this drink fits the bill. My son adored the lemon flavor, while the adults liked all the flavors.

The only flavor I wasn’t completely on board with was Passion Fruit. It was a little less balanced and a little more sweet, vs. tea-like. In the Pear and Raspberry flavors, for example, you could taste the tea, taste the fruit, and it was perfectly mixed.Pear was my favorite followed closely by Raspberry and Lemon. I’m addicted to pears, so I was worried they’d mess up my beloved pear taste, but the Pear tea was perfect – not too sweet or tart, it just had a fresh ripe pear flavor.

Kids close your ears – my boyfriend decided that the pear flavor would make the perfect mixer for drinks (um vodka) – I’m not an alcohol lover, so I don’t know, but he’s all raring to try it. The fizz part was super fun, and these were very refreshing.

The only downsides we found were the little tea granules in the bottom of the bottle – Cedar and me didn’t like that part, but no one else minded. Also, these aren’t really nutritional substantial, so it’s more like you’d get these for a super cool picnic contribution or when you’re craving fizz without the sugar and chemicals of a soda pop and with more flavor than plain old seltzer.

Overall:

4 pretty trees

4 out of 5 little trees! Because these aren’t nutritionally viable, I don’t feel like I can give them the full 5 points. However, they’re an awesome treat, healthier than other fizzy drinks, and their superior flavor will brighten your day and perk you up. It’s also fun to drink out of a bottle – like old school soda pop. Everyone who tried them in my taste test said they’d highly recommend them as an occasional beverage choice. Well, everyone but Cedar, who would likely drink the Lemon flavor all day long if allowed, not just occasionally.
