September is the last month that most folks can grow salad greens outside. If you sow some nice baby salad greens outside in September your greens should be ready in about a month. However, they’re not going to last all through winter of course so you can switch to store bought greens or grow some inside.

I’ve had some luck growing various salad greens indoors in a long container during cool months, although sometimes I’ve had issues with a lack of light. One tool I’ve been looking at lately that might help this light issue is the AeroGrow. Here’s the scoop.

aerogrow

AeroGrow uses NASA tested aeroponic technology to grow plants in water, nutrients and air.  The AeroGrow comes in various styles and sizes. This concept is an all in one garden machine that grows herbs, salad greens, flowers and more. There’s no dirt or weeds or mess and built in grow lights. AeroGrow participates in the “Safe Seed Initiative” which is run by the Council for Responsible Genetics, made from recyclable and some recycled products, and also uses less electricity than a 60 watt light bulb.

It would seem there are some perks, and while it doesn’t seem like ‘gardening’ exactly to me, and I think that growing herbs only in it seems odd, because you can grow herbs inside, just fine, even in winter. Also, I love the smell of soil, which this machine of course lacks. However, it does seem like a good way to get fresh salad greens in the winter with less trouble than containers or store bought produce. I’m not sure if I’m totally down with this product yet, but if I get one, I’ll let you know what I think.

Have you used an AeroGrow? What do you think?
