In a previous post I outlined what I thought would be some good policies and design ideas for a greener fast food restaurant. Then I noted that there are some restaurants around the country already following greener policies. Sweetgreen is one of these places. With locations in DC and Maryland, Sweetgreen offers take out and faster food but that’s served up with green style.

The menu at Sweetgreen is simple consisting of an array of gourmet salad choices or create your own salad choice, bread, plus all natural yogurt and yogurt toppings.

Some of their eco-perks:
- Offer Sweetgreen signature refillable bowls which customers can bring and use again and again, plus folks who do so get a free veggie on their salad.
- Member of the Green Restaurant Association.
- Almost all their packaging is biodegradable.
- Sweetgreen was built with antique reclaimed hickory.
- Their menus are made with plantable wild flower paper.
- Powered with 100% green power – wind energy from offsets from Clean Currents.
- Prices are reasonable which will keep folks coming back.
The downside is choice. For green fast food that appeals to the masses I think you’d have to have more than salads. I mean I love the idea and wish we had one in PDX, but millions of people love those burgers. Also, I’m not sure if all the food is organic here. Still this is one good example of a green fast food place that manages to serve up food quicker but still on a green scale.

Stay tuned for more green fast food places.
