Another great “green” innovation in this years Beijing Olympics is in the Olympic Village.     It uses Echelon’s LonWorks® technology (NASDAQ: ELON) to create a really efficiency lighting control system.        The smart lighting control system integrates all lighting subsystems for apartments, car park areas,  and landscape lighting to optimize energy usage while maintaining a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for the athletes.

The solution uses LonWorks enabled power controllers and analog input modules from Nico Technology to control the lighting system, and to monitor output status. Echelon’s LNS® network management software was used to design and install the network, and Echelon’s i.LON® Internet Servers automatically turn on or off lights based on pre-programmed scheduling functions. The i.LON servers interface with Advantech Industrial Automation Group’s WebAccess HMI, which can be used to monitor and control the system from the property management center.

I really like these systems specially the possibility of controlling remote resources via web.   For homes, the most popular are the X10 devices, but the ones installed in the Olympic Village is way more extensive.    I can imagine that soon,  property management companies would find such technology useful and enable them to save on electric bills.
